The Maxwell Student Union was originally designed in 1968 by Robert & Company Associates. Its design was in keeping with the times; however, it did not fit well in terms of contextual compatibility. SP Design was asked to design the facades for the building to be more compatible with the more traditional campus it anchored. The project was phased due to funding sources. On the interior, a multi-purpose dining space was created on the second level with complete audio-visual systems. The first level contained student activities, offices, a financial branch, conference spaces and accessible restrooms. The building, until this project, was not accessible by the handicapped. A new entrance from Clarke Street with its recognizable clock tower answered these concerns.

GCSU has had a successful working relationship with SP Design Group since before 2000. They consistently provide thorough and precise construction documents with designs that compliment the campus.
